Terra is the balanced tier of the GPT-5.6 line — the one aimed at production workloads that need to be good rather than exceptional. It is the direct competitor to Claude Sonnet 5, and the choice between them usually comes down to which ecosystem you are already in rather than a capability gap you could measure.

For most applications this is the right starting point in OpenAI's range.

Consistency. Terra does the ordinary work — drafting, summarising, transforming, answering from provided context — without the variance that makes smaller models frustrating in production. It follows format instructions reliably, which is what determines whether a model can sit inside a pipeline or needs a human checking its output.

The price-to-capability ratio is where the practical value sits: cheap enough for high volume, capable enough that you are not constantly working around its limits.

It will not surprise you. On problems needing genuine insight — spotting the flaw in an argument, noticing an unstated assumption — it produces competent, surface-level work. That is fine for most tasks and inadequate for a few.

Long multi-step agent runs expose the gap against Sol, for the same compounding reason that applies across every lineup.

Default here for production work in the OpenAI ecosystem and escalate to Sol only where you can name the failure you are fixing. If you are choosing between Terra and Claude Sonnet 5 on capability alone, you are probably over-thinking it — pick on tooling, latency in your region, and what your team already knows.
