The Wrong Chart Challenge
Deliberately visualise the same data four wrong ways to learn why the right one is right. Faster and more memorable than reading chart-selection guidance.
Why this one
Chart selection rules are easy to read and hard to internalise. Seeing your own data actively mislead in a pie chart teaches the rule permanently in about four minutes.
Steps
Take a small real dataset
Six to twelve rows of something you understand — monthly figures, categories with counts. Small enough to hold in your head while you look at each chart.
Plot it four ways deliberately badly
Time series as a pie. Categories as a line. Parts of a whole as separate bars with different scales. Two unrelated series on one axis. Build them; do not just imagine them.
Write down what each one implies falsely
A line chart across unordered categories implies a trend that does not exist. A pie of time periods implies they sum to a meaningful whole. Naming the specific false implication is the exercise.
Get the reasoning, then argue with it
Ask which chart fits your data and why, then present your worst version and ask what a reader would wrongly conclude. The second question produces the more useful answer.
You should end up with
Four wrong charts, each annotated with the false conclusion it invites.
Done when
- You can name the specific false implication of each wrong chart
- You can justify the right chart by what it compares
- You would now spot the same mistake in someone else's dashboard
If you want to go further
- Find a misleading chart in real published material and identify which rule it breaks
